Great Fall Reads

September 6th, 2007

While awaiting this site’s construction, here are some good reads you might enjoy:

  1. 1. Scientific American: Special Food Edition September 2007

I have read most of the articles, and if you’re short on time, I strongly recommend the “Eating made Simple”, and “Still hungry” articles. I particularly loved this edition because it addressed the economic aspects of obesity vs. starvation in the world. Extremely relevant to today’s paradox. Find it at any magazine stand (ex. shoppers, chapters)

  1. What to Eat by Marion Nestle (blog / book available at Chapters)

Marion Nestle is a renowned author, expert, and professor. I find her articles particularly eye opening. You might enjoy her other blog available at www.foodpolitics.com

These are a great Gym Read for the Stairmaster, elliptical, or bike…Read and share what you learned after you break a sweat!

What is HealthyVancouver.org?

A virtual Healthy Community in Vancouver for everyone wishing to start, maintain, or learn about healthy living through practical resources, inspiration, and tips relevant but not only limited to Vancouver.

Currently, this consists of a blog moderated by Wahiba Chair, but everyone’s input is what makes it a community.

Context

There is an undoubtedly overflowing amount of information on the internet, books, and magazines that relate to everything associated with weight, health, and dieting.

Every day, we are faced yet with new statistics and research that either show skyrocketing obesity numbers, or tell us what we already know: eat right and exercise, and you will be less at risk for …Yet, I feel the consumer is confused simply because of several stakeholders’ often conflicting incentives.

Plus, there is a lack of practical advice. Yes, I know I have to eat healthy, but as I walk into a grocery store, what to do?

Why Vancouver ?

Vancouver is not only my favorite city, but also one for which people seem be very aware of health and lifestyle. Although the internet has crossed many barriers, there is an increased need for personal touch and tangibility. Every city has its own culture, lifestyle, grocery stores, eating out places, and weather all of which influence our environment.

By limiting our information to what happens in the city, we can better analyze and tailor our environment to fit our lifestyle. Problem is, most of us are so caught up in our every day routine that stepping out is often costly in time and energy.

Why Blog?

Nowadays, everyone seems to have a blog, and although it’s a great way to voice one’s opinion, I have long debated whether or not I should start one, and whether my “blurs” would benefit anyone. Why should I add to that mass of information?

Thats’ not what I am trying to do. But instead, filter out the resources available for you to leverage your time, and energy, and get some healthy “aha” tips here and there through information exchange.

Pillars of HealthyVancouver.org

  1. Self = motivation, self-control, self-discipline
  2. Food= input
  3. Workout =output
  4. Learning
  5. Support System

Goals of HealthyVancouver.org

1. Build a modern and fresh healthy Vancouver community: This may be virtual, but the information will be tangible for people interested in practical every day healthy tips, places to eat, trends, and events. We’ll try to look at simple yet useful questions such as: Where do you eat for lunch? What’s a good pick at your favourite grocery store?

2. Keep current by sharing, exchanging, and filtering out both current and timeless important health topics/issues - specific but not just limited to Vancouver -

For instance, do you know what the “heart check” stands for in grocery stores?

3. Interact, digg, and voice your input: this is your blog.

Through the “comment” option, you may add information until we construct “Forums” if this site becomes useful.

4. Inspire, get inspired, and raise awareness. Motivation can drive positive momentum not only for us, but for people around us, let’s capture it. What was your catalyst to a healthy lifestyle?

5. Initiate a trend that encourages people to lead and sustain healthy lifestyles for the Olympics and beyond
